Police say they attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but ended up arresting two men Thursday night after being led on a chase by the driver of a stolen vehicle.

BROCKTON — What police say started as a routine traffic stop because a driver failed to use his blinker Thursday night turned into two arrests when detectives were led on a chase.

Detectives assigned to the gang unit were on patrol north of the downtown area about 8:53 p.m. when they said they noticed a Honda CR-V turning from Turner Street to Waverly Street without using its directional signal.

Police say the car started to slow down while driving on Waverly Street toward North Main Street, which is when the people inside of the car jumped out and started running. The SUV, which was moving when the men jumped out, came to a stop on its own after hitting a curb at North Main and Elliot streets.

The detectives chased after the two men on foot and caught up to them behind 312 North Main St., where police say the driver and passenger from the car had jumped over a barbed wire fence.

"The building had a posted sign, 'Private Property Keep Out,'" Duarte said.

Burgos, 20, of 881 Crescent St., Brockton, was charged with using a motor vehicle without authority, disorderly conduct and trespassing.

Lopez, 18, of 188 Howard St., Lawrence, was charged with using a motor vehicle without authority and disturbing the peace.

Both men were scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Brockton District Court. The outcome wasn't immediately available.
